Some sounds would be perfectly normal to an aircon and be labelled an operational sound while some should be raised for concern and be rectify. If you feel that your aircon is making a weird noise or the sound is not familiar it would be best to get it checked out.
- A sound like flowing water
- This sound is generated because the refrigerant in the air conditioner is flowing.
- This is a pumping sound of the water in the air conditioner and can be heard when the water is pumped out from the air conditioner during COOL or DRY operation mode.
- The refrigerant flows in the air conditioner even if the air conditioner is not working when the indoor units in other rooms are in operation.
- Ticking sound
- This sound is generated when the cabinet and frame of the air conditioner slightly expand or shrink as a result of temperature changes.
- Clicking sound during operation or idle time
- This sound is generated when the refrigerant control valves or the electrical parts operate
- Whirring sound
- If your AC sounds like a helicopter, you could have one of any number of mechanical problems with either the indoor unit or the outdoor unit. Typically, a whirring sound in an Aircon is the result of bad bearings in the indoor blower fan motor, or a faulty fan in either the indoor blower unit or outdoor unit. When the blades start to come loose or the fan otherwise starts to fall apart, a whirring sound can occur.
- However, the problem isn’t always a faulty part. Sometimes, a piece of paper or other debris can get trapped in either the indoor blower fan or the outdoor fan unit, causing a rapid, helicopter-blade-like whirring noise.
- Rattling sound
- A rattling noise can mean that your air conditioner is starting to deteriorate, and some of its parts are loosening.
- Another culprit could be the fan, which rattles when loose. Check for loose screws or bolts in the unit’s casing, clean condenser coils.
Investigating Weird Air Conditioner Noises
If your air conditioner suddenly starts making an unusual or abnormal noise, like hissing, buzzing, rattling or whirring, you may want to call a service professional to investigate and to address the source and rectify it.
If you hear something unsettling that you believe could indicate an issue with your Aircon, it’s a good idea to turn off your central air conditioner unit as a precaution until it can be inspected thoroughly.
